How to Keep Raccoons Away from Your House

By Nite Guard LLC

You want a summer with happy chickens in your backyard coop; a healthy and abundant garden; and a safe and comfortable home for your family and pets. But throw a raccoon into the mix, and these critters can swiftly derail your summer plans. If you need help deterring raccoons, then keep reading. Below, you’ll find some easy tips on how to keep raccoons away from your house.

Raccoons Dislike Stinky Soap

Many people with raccoon problems recommend using Irish Spring soap, which has a powerful scent that raccoons dislike. Scatter bits of soap in your garden and on your property perimeter. Instead of the scent of a ripe tomato or fresh ear of corn, the raccoon will smell Irish Spring, and decide your yard has no appeal.

No Food, No Water, No Problem

If you have pets with outdoor food and water bowls, store both indoors. You might be wondering, “Why the water bowl, too?” With an easy water source, raccoons have at least one good reason to stick around your home. Remove this source, and they’ll hit the road. Also, bird seed is another potential food source. If you have a bird feeder, store it every night, and sweep up all of the scattered bird seed on the ground.

The same goes for installing Nite Guard Solar lights. Sometimes, you need to spend time finding the perfect light configuration for your property. For example, one of our customers in California was about to throw in the towel when we came to the rescue.

“We were going to send the lights back until your knowledgeable staff people took the time to work with us and corrected the way we had mounted them. They then worked perfectly to protect our birds after that. Thank you!”
