From Day to Night: Two Tips on How to Protect Your Garden from Deer

By Katie Berning

In the eyes of deer, a backyard garden is easy-pickings. And with all of the time and effort spent working in a garden, it is heartrending to find that deer have thoroughly devoured your garden. If your garden has been targeted as a prime feasting ground for area deer, there are a few solutions that you can undertake to rectify the situation.

As a Minnesota business whose sister company is Oakwood Game Farm, a commercial game bird operation, Nite Guard Solar understands first hand the detrimental role that predators have on farms and gardens. The team at Nite Guard Solar has years of experience protecting our own property from predator attacks. We guarantee that our predator deterrent lights will resolve your garden woes.

One of the first steps that you can take to prevent deer from feeding on your garden is to install Nite Guard Solar lights. Place four lights on a four foot high post in the center of your garden. Read a Nite Guard Solar blog post from September 2013 to learn more about how to effectively use the Nite Guard Solar lights in your garden.

The key to using Nite Guard Solar lights in a garden is to move the lights every 1 – 2 weeks. With the frequent movement of the flashing red lights, deer sense a new threat, and no longer view the garden as that enticing of a meal.

As Nite Guard Solar lights are a nocturnal solution for hungry deer, to protect your garden from deer during the daytime, we recommend using our reflective, noise-making repellent tape. Cut Nite Guard's repellent tape into five or six strips, with each strip measuring 30” long. Adhere the strips to a four foot high post about twenty feet from your garden. If you have a large garden, place a post with repellent tape every twenty to twenty-five feet around the garden.

With the spring gardening season around the corner, this is an important time of the year to begin planning not only what fruits, vegetables, and flowers to plant, but also how to protect those plants from wild animals.
